NRV Olympic Team

Talent, training and team spirit in best possible combination produce the finest results time and again: Titles!

The regatta successes of committed members created the special climate for the advancement of young talents and the support of experienced and performance oriented sailors. The result of this engagement for top sports is the “NRV Olympic Team” displaying the NRV’s burgee on the world’s regatta courses, at world cups and international championships.

The idea to form an NRV Olympic Team was born in the year 2000 on occasion of the Olympic Games in Sydney. Jointly with Gunter Persiehl, the NRV’s commodore at the time, the NRV sailors “down under” noted that the multitude of problems facing individuals in the Olympic boat classes could be solved much more effectively in form of a team. Gunter Persiehl realised the chances of the new challenge and formed a strong sailing team.

Since then the NRV Olympic Team is regularly representing the club and the country of Germany at Olympic Games. Just recently in London 2012 five teams were competing in Olympic and Paralympic classes, bringing back home two silver medals for the NRV and for their country. In Rio 2016 Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel were the most successful amongst the Germany sailing team by winning a bronze medal in the 49er competition.

The secret of this sporting success primarily is due to the synergies obtained. On the one hand these are formed by the systematic, sports oriented and personal exchange amongst the sailors themselves and on the other hand specialists assist by supplying expert knowledge.

All of this would hardly be possible without a consistent as well as a successful and far reaching partnership. Since the founding of the NRV Olympic Team this is a core definition for all team members. The team partners secure the financial support and on their part profit from the close ties with the team. They are personally present at events like Kieler Woche in Germany or Trofeo Princesa Sofia on Mallorca/Spain. The sailors on the other part fly the NRV’s and the team partner flags at lectures and product presentations. This is sport sponsorship at its best, delivers the team’s message to the public and finances the NRV Olympic Team independently of the Club’s membership fees.

Since 2016 the NRV Olympic Team is under the patronage of Andy Grote, senator in the city of Hamburg for sports and internal affairs.
