North Sea Week
The North Sea Week ("Nordseewoche") regatta during the Whitsunday Week has been a tradition since 1925. A group of NRV members forming a "Cuxhaven Group" joined forces with clubs along the coast to launch North Sea Week with Heligoland as its showcase. Organized by the North Sea Week regatta association formed by nine clubs in addition to the NRV, three feeder races to Heligoland have been run from Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Cuxhaven - the last preceeded for Hamburgians by a race from Wedel to Cuxhaven ever since. These are followed by the very popular Round Heligoland race, with the fastest yacht winning the "hanseboot Cup" donated by the Hamburg trade fair of same name. In 1972 the NRV organized new race courses for this until today still growing huge field of participants (2005: roughly 500 yachts, 1,500 sailors) as well as the participation of the spectacular "Cup yachts" and financial support from sponsoring partners.
North Sea Week is crowned by the Pantaenius round Skagen race, which is Germany`s longest offshore race covering 520 nm. Every other year since 1968 the starting gun has also been heard for a race finishing in Edinburgh (400 nm).
