Club life

Any institution that has repeatedly chalked up victories afloat and celebrated ashore in fitting style ever since 1868 will inevitably reflect pride in such achievements. The Clubhouse in the heart of Hamburg is the focal point for traditional meetings, parties of young people, NRV festivities or completely private festivities. And once a year the NRV fills Hamburg's largest ballrooms.

Regattas on the Alster are traditional highlights in the club life. Welcome parties for yachtsmen returning from trans-atlantic regattas or from other sailing activities like Kiel or Travemuende Weeks have become great events. The culmination so far has been the visit of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in 1965. On that occasion Her Majesty donated a special prize for the Dragon class and personally handed it to the winner.

Even the NRV dinner talks attract a distinguished audiance, New Year's receptions are still keenly anticipated rituals, and dinners to present Golden Club Pins and Brooches for 50 years`membership are dignified occasions. Gentlemen-only dinners are affairs that are rigorously kept exclusive. More recently, the same may also be said of other events reserved for ladies.

Contrasting programms:
NRV youngsters successful in sailing are allowed to occasioanlly go out and paint the town red. The NRV seniors look on with approval and remember their own monkey business with nostalgia.
